Bill O’Reilly Interviews Richard Poe
The O’Reilly Factor
Fox News Network
Richard Poe appeared on The O’Reilly Factor, May 18, 2004, to discuss his NewsMax Magazine cover story “George Soros’ Coup” (May 2004). Below is a transcript of their seven-minute conversation.
O’REILLY: In the “personal story” segment tonight, as we mentioned in the “Talking Points” memo, left wing extremist George Soros is heavily funding the Democratic presidential effort. And that might hurt Senator Kerry.
Just yesterday, Soros told graduates at Columbia University that President Bush has killed more innocent people than the terrorists did on 9/11. Nice.
With us now is Richard Poe, who has investigated Soros for NewsMax Magazine, a right wing publication. All right, Mr. Poe, what did you find out about this guy?
RICHARD POE, NEWSMAX CONTRIBUTING EDITOR: Well, first of all what he said at Columbia, I think we just have to ignore. It’s Democrat boilerplate. You can go to DemocraticUnderground.com and see every 13-year-old troll saying exactly the same thing. We’ve all heard that before.
What’s important to understand about Soros is that he’s driven by power and money, not so much by ideology.
O’REILLY: All right, so let me stop you there. So he’s not some leftwing loon, is that what you’re saying?
POE: Well, he — I would say he is somewhat loony. I don’t think the word “left” encompasses his complexity. He is a person who, by his own admission, has what he calls “messianic” feelings about himself and his mission in life that he’s had since childhood.
O’REILLY: What is that mission?
POE: His mission is to be the “conscience of the world,” he said once. And, more particularly, on a practical level, to convert every country in the world to his philosophy of the so-called “open society.”
O’REILLY: Which means what? We know he’s a drug legalizer. What else?
POE: Well, he learned from the atheist philosopher Karl Popper, who was his teacher in England, an atheist philosophy of a so-called open or free society…
O’REILLY: All right, is Soros an atheist? Self-admitted?
POE: Oh, absolutely. Not only self-admitted, but actually he is a crusading atheist. He’s a militant atheist. In fact, a great deal of his opposition to George W. Bush — perhaps one might even say hatred for the president — has to do with his absolute contempt for the president’s religious beliefs.
In his book, The Bubble of American Supremacy, which he wrote explicitly to explain why he opposes the president, he lambasts and ridicules and mocks in the cruelest terms the president’s beliefs. And he makes it very plain that he considers people who are born-again Christians — and presumably people who are devout believers of any sort — are idiots who should not hold public office.
O’REILLY: All right, so he wants an open society, Soros does. And that means a secular society, no trace of religion in it or spirituality, drug legalization, I assume gay marriage, all kinds of…
POE: Absolutely.
O’REILLY: You know, all of that.
POE: Gay activism is an essential part of his philanthropy…
O’REILLY: And he’s very anti-Bush in the foreign policy realm. What’s his foreign policy?
POE: He’s a globalist. He’s a dogmatic globalist. He believes that countries such as ours are dangerous. He actually has said the United States is the greatest danger to peace in the world today.
O’REILLY: So what kind of a chief executive officer does he want? Someone who would just cede the superpower status of the U.S.A.?
POE: Oh yes, just as the Clintons were doing. He did very well under the Clintons. He was very close to the Clinton regime.
O’REILLY: Yeah, but Clinton used his power to right a wrong in the Balkans, to remove Milosevic. I mean, Clinton wasn’t some namby-pamby in there. He used his power.
POE: Well, one could debate this question, of course…
O’REILLY: Yes, but I mean, I’m coming at it from a factual point of view. On a number of occasions, Clinton used his power to right wrongs or his perceived wrongs in the world. I don’t think Soros would have bombed the Balkans, do you?
POE: Um, well… [pause]. I don’t know. [Smiles and chuckles.]
O’REILLY: Okay. But if your contention is that he sees the United States as the problem in the world…
POE: Yes.
O’REILLY: …as an aggressor…
POE: Yes.
O’REILLY: …the natural inclination was I’m not going to leave Milosevic alone, let him do what he wants over there.
All right now, here’s the key question. If Soros is what you say he is — and I have no reason to doubt it, I mean, what I know about the man pretty much matches up to what you found out — the Democratic Party is taking a lot of money from him.
POE: Yes.
O’REILLY: Is that going to hurt Kerry’s run when people find out about it? And should Bush make this an issue?
POE: Well, it should. But I don’t know if people are going to find out the types of things about George Soros we’re discussing.
O’REILLY: Well, 10 million of them are tonight.
POE: Yes, but, you know, Bill, a lot of things have been on your show, such as Jayna Davis and her theories about the Oklahoma bombing, that never went farther than your show, even though a lot of people saw it.
O’REILLY: Yeah, that’s true, but this is huge. Soros now is a player in the Democratic world. And if he’s that extreme, I believe that that can’t do Kerry any good, can it?
POE: Oh, of course not. The man is — well, frankly, he’s — in my humble opinion — George Soros is a madman.
He’s far beyond an extremist. He’s a man who is dedicated to eradicating everything that our country represents to traditional, ordinary — I’ll use the word “conservative” — people.
O’REILLY: Right. All right. Well, we’re going to stay on Soros. And believe me, Mr. Poe, people will know about this guy before the election. And we’re going to, you know, see what Senator Kerry thinks about him and this and that. We appreciate you coming in.
POE: Thank you.
