Time Inc. has joined the growing list of major media companies whose circulation claims have come under scrutiny from federal prosecutors. The U.S Attorney’s Office in New York subpoenaed Time on Thursday for information regarding its circulation figures, reports Reuters. Time, Sports Illustrated and People are among the 155 magazines published by Time Inc.
As left-leaning media reel under competition from Fox News, talk radio and the Internet, more and more newspapers and magazines have been caught fraudulently inflating their circulation stats. The more readers they claim, the more they can charge for advertising space.
Since last year, publications caught inflating their circulation figures include Belo Corp.’s Dallas Morning News, Hollinger International Inc.’s Chicago Sun-Times and Tribune Co.’s Newsday.

Check out what others are saying about this post...I am not an attorney. Surprise! Surprise! However, can you imagine the lawsuits that this could lead to?
Organizations counted on accurate circulation figures to properly promote their interests or products. This could actually lead to an in-depth investigation of the “real” effectiveness of advertising, simply to determine damages involved.
THERE PROBABLY NEED TO BE NEW STUDIES DONE, WITH RESPECT TO MODERN-DAY ADVERTISING.
Lawsuits will certainly lead to that.
It’s about TIME!
relativism in its finest hour – can it get better than this. like telling all your schoolbuddies your daddy’s a millionaire and they want to be friends until they see where you live. what is that saying about “truth in advertising”?
AH Belo also owns TV stations in Texas and New Orleans.
I’ll be glad to see those clowns fall.
They have been a major DNC tool for preserving their racist and fraud-ridden voting bloc.
So what if they were reporting the numbers they intended to sell? Results are not as important as making an effort with good intentions.
I don’t understand why this is an issue that needs our federal tax dollars used for investigation. So they lied about their numbers.
